The Home Depot Foundation Operation Surprise
The FRH branch in Opa Locka, established 50 years ago, has deep ties to the area’s military history, centered around its 1918 Navy blimp hangar and WWII-era airport, which trained thousands of pilots. As the airport grew, military housing and community resources, including a Post for veterans and active-duty personnel, were built nearby.
The FRH, part of The Military Coalition, advocates for Sea Services personnel on Capitol Hill, provides legislative guidance, career support, and operates community centers nationwide. Despite multiple hurricane damages, the Opa Locka branch, led by two dedicated Navy veterans, aims to revitalize the Post as a community hub. The Hall hosts a bar, kitchen, and offices, while the Pavilion serves as a space for BBQs and events. Adjacent to a senior veterans’ housing facility, the Pavilion could become a safe gathering space for elderly veterans to enjoy recreational activities.
For Veterans Day we partnered with the Home Depot Foundation to give the facility a facelift including paint, landscaping, appliances, seating areas and more!
